Capital Guardian Youth Challenge Academy (CGYCA) is a part of the National Youth Challenge Program, authorized and funded by the Department of Defense and conducted by the National Guard. The Youth Challenge Program was established un 1993 and there are currently 34 programs in 27 states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia (some states have more than one program). The goal of the program is to give dropouts a second chance to complete their high school education. One of the most important things you need to know if the program is voluntary and youth are required to apply for admissions.

Capital Guardian Youth Challenge is not like a regular high school and it is not easy. It is a 22-week residential program conducted in a military style format that provides the principles, structures, and emphasis on discipline and personal responsibility. The cadet is a member of a training platoon, lives in a dormitory, wears a uniform, meets military grooming standards, observes military customs and courtesies, does a lot of marching, and perhaps most importantly he/she is held accountable for their words and actions. The staff is caring for dedicated, training, and committed to helping the cadet; they understand and appreciate the courage and commitment it took to make the decision to attend our Academy. They will do everything they can to help the cadet succeed; however, they will not cut the cadet any slack or go easy on them in terms of meeting our high standards. The staff uses a "hands-off" approach that is tough and disciplined yet caring and respectful, to instruct, train and motivate the cadet. After graduation from CGYCA, the cadet continues to work with the adult mentor in a positive relationship that supports the cadet in applying the positive values and new skills acquired during the 22-week residential phase. This post-graduation mentoring phase is a major factor in the overall success of the Youth Challenge Program and we devote a significant amount of the staff time and attention to supporting the mentoring program.

If you are 21 years or older, able to pass a background check, and able to complete training, please sign up.

Mission Statement

To intervene in and reclaim the lives of at-risk youth, and produce program graduates with the values, skills, education, and self-discipline necessary to succeed as adults.

Description

Youth ChalleNGe is a residential program that incorporates a highly structured quasi-military format emphasizing self-discipline, personal responsibility, and positive motivation. Students, who are referred to as cadets while at the Academy, must meet military grooming standards, wear military-type uniforms, and observe standard military customs and courtesies. Each class involves a 3-phase program that begins with a two-week Acclimation phase where the goal is to identify those students that have the desire and discipline to complete the program. Students who successfully complete the Acclimation phase enter the 20-week Challenge phase where the emphasis is on the "Eight Core Component" curriculum. Cadets must show improvement in each component.
