KidsBuild! 2019 is held again at BSA Space on Saturday, April 6 and Sunday April 7, 2019.
Guided by volunteer design professionals, families will choose a construction site from a fictional city grid, design and build a building, and be awarded a certificate of occupancy from the city building inspectors. Geared for children age five-13, KidsBuild! lets children understand and formulate ideas about architecture and design as they build a city from the ground up. To learn more about the event, go to www.kidsbuild.org or check us out at Facebook.

Friday, April 5th 12pm - 7pm : Volunteers assisting with this task are essential for the success of the event! Setup includes setting up stations for the various steps, organizing donated materials, laying out the city plan on the lobby floor, etc.

Saturday and Sunday, April 6th and 7th 9am - 1:30pm and 1pm - 5:30pm: Share your love of design by volunteering for KidsBuild! Volunteers are needed before, during, and after the event to ensure our hundreds of young designers have an exceptional learning experience. You do not need to be a professional designer to volunteer but willingness to share your enthusiasm with the next generation is a requirement. Jobs: registration/permitting, building inspector/guide, construction yard - material management, and photo area.

Saturday, April 14th 10am - 12pm: Release your inner Godzilla and help take down the city! Cleanup includes dismantling & removing the remains of the city from the building and generally helping get the BSA Space back to order. Join us for a pizza party afterward to celebrate our volunteers and another successful event!

Mission Statement

LBD:MA strives to integrate the design process in how every teacher teaches and every student learns. As a result of design-based learning, children value their connection to architecture and develop a sense of stewardship for sustainable, well-designed environments.A proponent of project-based learning, LBD:MA knows that children have the curiosity to form their own design questions, the creative ability to find their own solutions and the higher-level thinking skills to communicate their ideas about those solutions. When we give our future designers, engineers, builders, decision-makers and members of the global community the opportunity to communicate their ideas about their built and natural environments, we all benefit.

Description

Learning By Design in Massachusetts (LBD:MA) draws on the power of architecture and design to build within each child an essential structure for learning and creating that will inform every endeavor in their lives. We bring design activities focusing on people, places and spaces into the heart of K-12 learning; enable students, teachers and architects to learn and design together; and build a strong community dedicated to K-12 architecture and design education.

LBD:MA is a statewide, K-12 architecture and design education program. Our Design Educators/architects and volunteer architects engage children, in and out of schools, in hands-on, real world design projects. Begun in 1999 as a program of the Boston Society of Architects/AIA, LBD:MA became its own 501c3 non-profit organization in 2009. Over 20,000 children, educators and architects/designers have worked together in our programs
