YOU & YOUR DOG ARE NEEDED! BECOME A HOSPICE VOLUNTEER and SHARE THE BEST GIFT YOU CAN GIVE...YOURSELF & YOUR THERAPY / COMFORT DOG!

Heartland Hospice "Friendly Pet Visitors" help to personalize, support and enhance the quality of our Patients' lives by bringing the gift of caring Companionship to our Patients with regular visits. These Volunteers offer...

  • Companionship by just being there for the Patient and offering to read, play music or a game, simply talking with the Patient, or assisting with non-medical tasks
  • Emotional support to the Patients by listening & sharing experiences, allowing the expression of feelings, holding a hand, giving a needed hug, and offering words of comfort

Our "Friendly Pet Visitor" Volunteers receive training regarding the Philosophy of Hospice, the role of the Volunteer and other Staff Members, as well as helpful skills in caring for and communicating with Hospice Patients and their Families. Volunteer hours are flexible and scheduled according to your availability. Also, Volunteer duties are assigned based on your comfort level, and there is absolutely no pressure to do anything that falls outside of it.

The goal of Hospice Care is not to "cure" but to provide "comfort care" at the end of a Person's life. Together, as an interactive Team, our Volunteers and Staff strive to make life as comfortable and fulfilling as possible to the very last moment of life.

Dogs must be certified by Therapy Dogs International/TDI, Lutheran Church Charities, or another Comfort Dog Training Organization, have current Immunizations Records, Insurance Coverage, and License/Tags. Owner/Handlers must be willing to visit with our Hospice Patients and Families in Facilities and their Homes, and follow Heartland's Rules/Regulations. Please Note: Doberman Pincher, Rotweiler, Pit Bull, and other aggressive Dogs are not accepted. For more information, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator at Heartland Hospice in Northbrook, Illinois at 847-272-7338.

Thank you for your time and consideration. Together, we can do great things!

Mission Statement

Heartland Hospice provides specialized care that meets the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of patients and loved ones facing the challenges of end of life. The quality of life for those we serve is enhanced by encouraging personal choices, supporting meaningful experiences and preserving dignity. Every day, we enrich the lives of our patients and the people who love them by blending advanced medical care with a compassionate touch.

Description

Heartland Hospice offers hospice services wherever a patient calls home, whether the care is provided in a home setting, assisted living facility or skilled nursing center. We are committed to caring for the mind, body and spirit. Our specially trained staff helps manage pain and symptoms, thereby enabling patients to live their lives as fully as possible. In addition, our team members create a comforting environment and provide emotional support to families who need help coping with the loss of a loved one.

To serve as our guiding principles, we've created the Heartland Caring Promises: We promise to care for the mind, body and spirit. We promise to provide care that is comforting and compassionate. We promise to respect patient and family choices. We promise to unite with community partners in care. We promise to be accepting and supportive of patients wherever they are in life's journey.
