The expansive Cuyama River, near the Dick Smith Wilderness will be full of riparian wonder, with some nice water flow this time of year. We'll make base camp Saturday morning then head out day hiking along the river bed looking for invasive tamarisk plants. When found, we'll treat the bottom few inches of bark with herbicide, then move on in search of the next.
It's not difficult work in a relatively flat area without a trail. We'll head back in the late afternoon to enjoy a delish community feast and camp out under the starry night sky.
Sunday, we'll enjoy a beautiful excursion hike before heading out in the early afternoon for an early arrival home. This a great trip if you like to hike in a beautiful area while ridding invasive tamarisk from this special riparian habitat.
Bring your Spirit of Adventure and basic camping gear! This also works as a Saturday only project.
Habitat Works Volunteers have been treating tamarisk on over 357 miles of watershed since 2003.
