ORGANIZATION: East Harlem Tutorial Program

FY23 Volunteer Program Descriptions

East Harlem Tutorial Program (EHTP) offers a variety of volunteer opportunities through our public charter schools, after-school, and summer programs. The programs range from subject-matter tutoring, providing scholars with homework help, mentoring, and preparing high school scholars for college success. Volunteers support our scholars, prepare them for academic success, encourage their social enrichment, and help them gain skills.

In-person Volunteer Opportunities

Classroom Buddies, Elementary Program - Volunteers support one of our Kindergarten-5th grade after-school classrooms and help foster a positive classroom culture by:

  • Supporting with operational tasks i.e. taking attendance and grading
  • Engaging in fun classroom enrichment activities with scholars
  • Completing homework assignments alongside scholars

Minimum Commitment: Twice a week

When: Monday through Thursday, 2:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. (start and end times dependent on site and when you can arrive)

Road to Success - Volunteers support one of our 6th-8th grade after-school classrooms during enrichment clubs (i.e. Comic Book Club, Science Club, Dance Club, and others) and an active hour of structured activities and games

Minimum Commitment: Twice a week

When: Monday through Friday, 2:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. (start and end times dependent on site and when you can arrive)

Classroom Buddies, High School Program - Volunteers support a high school after-school elective (Coding, Photography, Robotics, Creative Writing) by:

  • Supporting with operational tasks i.e. taking attendance, reviewing student work, and troubleshooting tech issues
  • Modeling a positive classroom culture by supporting activities, building relationships with scholars, and engaging them with class content

Minimum Commitment: Twice a week

When: Monday through Thursday, 4:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.








College Mentoring - a two-year mentoring program that guides high school scholars through the entire college admissions process and supports them as they navigate their first year of college. See the full volunteer description by clicking here . The College Mentoring program is a two-year commitment with different requirements in Years One & Two. Applicants must have completed a 4 year degree. We offer college mentoring as either a 1-1 option or as a small group option:

Academic Tutoring - Volunteers support our K-12th grade scholars succeed in various subjects (Math, English, Science, History), while in a one-on-one setting. Volunteers should feel confident tutoring and have demonstrated success in a Kindergarten - 12th grade level subject.

Minimum Commitment: Once a week for at least 1-hour per semester

When: Tuesday or Wednesday, 5:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. (Final schedule will be determined by each pair)

Acceptance is contingent upon successful completion of medical, COVID-19 vaccination, and criminal background checks.

COVID-19 Update: In accordance with EHTP's vaccine policy, all staff, volunteers, and interns are mandated to be fully vaccinated (14 days after the last dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines or the single dose of the J&J vaccine) by the start of their work with scholars.

EHTP’s mission is to prepare students with the academic skills, strength of character, and emotional well-being to excel in high school and college, lead in their communities, and realize their best possible selves.

Description

EHTP operates out-of-school time programming that provides academic enrichment, college-ready resources and social-emotional support for students in after-school programs for grades K-12 and operates 5 public charter schools known East Harlem Scholars Academies. EHTP would not be the organization that we are today without the help and support from our amazing volunteers. Volunteers empower our scholars, prepare them for academic success, support their social enrichment, and help them gain the confidence they will need to succeed in college and in life.
