Volunteers must enjoy working directly with children and families in a medical environment to facilitate art-making projects. Children's Healing Art Project (CHAP) is launching a pilot program in Salem to provide our healing art experiences outside the Portland area. You will work with a Teaching Artists from our staff to make these experiences happen. No art background is necessary - experience working with children with medical issues is desired. The ability to make a personal connection with each child and family members is essential, as you create a judgement-free, positive, joyful, creative experience for every individual. Art-making ranges from painting and drawing to jewelry-making and clay modeling. We are looking for volunteers who can make a weekly commitment to a 3 to 4-hour shift every week between April and December 2019. The day of the week and shift timing is TBD. Must pass a background check and complete any other OHSU-required training/orientation.

If you are a positive, motivated, reliable, person-centered individual who enjoys art and children, please consider this opportunity.

Mission Statement

Children's Healing Art Project (CHAP) brings the healing power of art to children and families facing medical challenges.

Description

At CHAP, children are known for their creativity and ingenuity-not by their disease, diagnosis or disability. Our innovative and inclusive healing arts programs are provided free of charge to children, teens and families affected by pediatric illness, disability or special need. CHAP provides Oregon’s only in-and-out of hospital interactive healing arts program.

Each week, CHAP's trained teaching artists lead over 40 hours of healing art experiences at area hospitals including Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, Knight Cancer Institute and Providence St. Vincent Medical Center. CHAP’s proven method of mobile arts service delivery features unlimited art supplies and projects designed to spark the imagination.

CHAP's Art Club Program provides fun and engaging art experiences to children with medical challenges outside the hospital, giving these children ongoing opportunities to explore and create - without labels or limits. Our outreach programs provide tailored art experiences with our partners who include Down Syndrome Network Oregon, Camp Erin, and Candlelighters for Children with Cancer.

CHAP's healing art experiences strengthen the people we work with, ensuring that they have the opportunity to express themselves, thus empowering them to improve the quality of their lives. We couldn't do all that we do without the support of dedicated volunteers!
