Volunteer with Behind the Book (www.behindthebook.org), a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to explore stories and empower their voices. Through our innovative programs, which are part of the class curricula, accomplished authors visit high-needs Pre-K-12th-grade classrooms to guide students in creating their own writing projects.

You need no experience or training to volunteer. As a coach, you'll support and encourage students as they work on their projects, in the classroom or on a field trip.

This neighborhood walking tour needs your help at a school in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, NY. To sign up, reply with the program code to volunteer@behindthebook.org. We'll supply more information when you're confirmed.

Program 241KCL-H

Date: Friday, March 15th
Time: 9:00 - 10:00 AM (please arrive at 8:45 AM for orientation)
Volunteer Role: Walking tour chaperone

About the program: Kindergartners read Stop That Yawn! by Caron Levis, in which Gabby and her Granny visit a place where beds are for bouncing, hushes are shushed, and it’s never too late for ice cream. The author and chaperones will join a walking tour of the neighborhood for students to choose places or people to write about. *You can also sign up to be a writing coach on Tuesday, March 26th from 10:00 - 11:00 AM to guide students in the classroom in describing a sound, such as a yawn, sneeze, or clap, and what was happening as it traveled around a block.
