About NCSE's Science Outreach
NCSE provides free science outreach in underserved communities around the country focusing on addressing misconceptions about evolution and climate change. We develop and test activities in the Bay Area then make them freely available for interested groups to present accurate, inquiry-based activities in their own community. We believe that even potentially controversial topics can be discussed in a respectful manner and train all volunteers in our no-conflict approach.
About the Opportunity
This volunteer opportunity involves helping us create and test the activities used for outreach. Volunteers will come for a three hour shift (1-4) on Fridays. The first 30 minutes will include professional development opportunities for volunteers to grow their science outreach skills. The rest of the shift will be developing and testing activities. This includes:
Arts and Crafts Activities: We used thermochromic paint and epoxy to create antigenic assays to explain why you have to get a flu shot every year. We created blocks out of asphalt sand, glass and wood that can be used for a design challenge about the heat island effect. We built the front panel of a time machine to transport you back to the Permian extinction. Volunteers not only help us create engaging and fun activities, but often provide some of the most creative design ideas to improve our prototypes.
Beta-Testing Activities Have you ever wanted to play an ice cream cone after digestion? Have you wanted to design real-world solutions to combat nitrate pollution? Have you ever wanted to try to domesticate wolves? Volunteers provide feedback on the early stages of new activities. That means playing with lots of fun science toys.
Presenting Outreach in the Community: NCSE works with several local organizations to provide free science activities every month. Once volunteers have completed two, two-hour trainings in the no-conflict approach and effective interpretation, they are invited to help present the activities in the community.
Volunteers are expected to be present for one shift every month. Shifts are currently only available Friday afternoons 1-4.
