Home Repair Project Volunteers
A great group of volunteers working on a new roof!

Milford Housing Development Corporation (MHDC) offers three programs that give you the opportunity to directly help local families and to come together and serve with us: The Home Repair Program (HRP), the Self-Help Program (SHP), and the Senior Repair Corps (SRC).

Local individual volunteers or small groups who wish to help make a difference for senior and/or disabled citizens of modest means should consider joining Milford Housing Development Corporation's Senior Repair Corps. These repairs often cost less than $250, take less than a day to complete, and are performed for senior and/or disabled homeowners whose income is less than 80% AMI. Intake Specialists qualify both the applicant and the repair according to program guidelines before any Corps member is ever contacted to help.

Corps members are then called upon to make minor repairs, not covered by other programs in Delaware, which allow the homeowner and their family to stay safely in their home. If they can, the senior pays for the materials and volunteers do the work. If they cannot pay, MHDC will fund the repair upfront and the homeowner can repay the cost over time. In some cases, the volunteer group prefers to raise the money needed to assist the senior so that the senior does not have to worry about payment. Some examples of these types of repairs include:

  • Replace light bulbs in porch, deck, or driveway lights
  • Change batteries in smoke detector(s)
  • Reframe a door jam or hang, oil, or adjust a door
  • Secure a handrail for safety on indoor or outdoor steps
  • Add a grab bar for safety by a shower, tub, or toilet
  • Fix or replace a light fixture or faucet
  • Install a hand-held shower head
  • Install or repair a lock
  • Patch a broken window pane or small area of the floor

If you would like to volunteer with us for a day, a week, or on a more regular basis we want to talk with you. Repair experience is not required but is helpful. We will teach you all you need to know. All tools and materials are provided by MHDC. Site supervisors will ensure that the work is done safely and efficiently.

If you have construction or repair experience and would like to volunteer to lead other volunteers on a repair, please let us know that too.

In any case, MHDC is happy to answer any questions and there is no obligation on your part. For more information visit: www.milfordhousing.com or e-mail Resource Development Specialist, Susan M. Davis, at sdavis@milfordhousing.com. You can also call 302.422.8255 Ext 102.

Mission Statement

The mission of Milford Housing Development Corporation (MHDC) is to provide decent, safe, and affordable housing solutions to people of modest mean. At MHDC our homes are more than just a physical structure; they are what bind our families, friends, and communities together.

Description

Milford Housing Development Corporation (MHDC) is a value-driven, nonprofit affordable housing developer and program provider, offering a full-continuum of housing-related services to meet the needs of the community. The agency is known for an open-minded approach, commitment to quality, and caring passion for client and staff alike.

MHDC was founded in 1977 by group of local concerned citizens who saw a dire need for affordable housing in the community. Like other nonprofits, the agency was led only by a volunteer, yet dedicated board of directors for many years. In 1994, the agency hired its first employee and growth quickly began. Within three years, MHDC had completed development of its first affordable, senior rental complex. During this same time, MHDC became the first and only Delaware-recipient of the Self-Help Housing Program award from the
U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Development (USDA RD). Since then, MHDC has grown into Delaware’s leading nonprofit provider of affordable housing.
