Volunteers will perform simple tasks to assist and support students and staff members during a fun day of learning and exploration in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics (STEAM). Volunteers will help set up materials, assist and manage students as they work on their assignments, and clean up once the students are finished. Each STEAM day is full of hands-on learning, fun, excitement, and exploration. We hope you will join in to support this amazing program!

About the STEAM Program:

Richland Elementary School has a unique educational program known as STEAM, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics. Our STEAM program is a day of hands on learning in each of the STEAM areas. Once a month, each grade will alter the traditional class schedule and instead rotate to different classes to engage in learning experiences that are not usually possible in the daily classroom. These experiences follow the standards for each grade level. On each STEAM Day, Richland teachers lead the learning experiences and volunteers provide assistance to the teachers and students as they set up, work, and clean up from their lessons.

Hands on learning experiences in an elementary school takes many hands to make the day a success. This program is thriving because of support and assistance from parents and community members. More help is always needed!

Mission Statement

Richland Elementary School has been educating students in San Marcos for 60 years. This year we have 848 students with over 100 teachers, paraprofessionals and staff to offer the best in education for our children. The Richland staff believes that it is our responsibility to teach a rigorous and relevant curriculum to all students in a close partnership between home, school and the community. This will instill in our students an appreciation and desire to learn and work hard, the ability to think creatively and critically, and the belief that they will be successful in their future years of schooling and chosen careers. Volunteers are primarily recruited by the FOR Club, Richland Elementary School’s Parent Teacher Organization. It stands for "Friends of Richland". It refers to the motto of, "For school, For children and For community." The FOR club is run by volunteers to raise money for school activities and programs which are no longer funded by the state.

Description

In addition to top notch education for grades PreK-5th, Richland boasts many educational programs and extracurricular opportunities designed to optimize student happiness and success.

Music -
Every student participates in 40 minutes of music instruction taught by a credentialed teacher weekly.

STEAM and Maker's Space - Each grade-level has one Friday monthly devoted to instruction in Science, Technology, Engineering, Visual Arts and Mathematics. Teachers and volunteers provide students with hands-on learning experiences in these disciplines. In the Maker's Space, students are given time, materials and guidance to pursue special interests and answer questions.

Student Council - Each year two student classroom representatives are chosen from each of the 4th and 5th grade classes. Student Council officers are elected by the Richland students. This group assists in many school activities and is facilitated by Richland teachers.

Safe School Ambassadors - Third through Fifth grade student leaders provide valuable schoolwide conflict resolution support with students at Richland during recess, lunch and throughout the day.

Mustang Friends - Mustang Friends is an inclusion program that is specially designed to promote ability awareness all year round, encourage friendships between students with and without disabilities, and practice social skills.
