The Adoption Files Initiative

The Post Adoption program has embarked on an unprecedented project - we are auditing approximately 3,500 of our own adoption files between the years of 1950-2000 to ensure that adoptees and their families have received information and materials about their adoptions they are entitled to but may not have seen.

File Auditors read over adoptive files cover to cover and help Amara staff build a case as to whether the file needs further action such as providing an adoptee non-identifying medical information, passing along unsent family heirlooms, or completing search requests. This work uses today's laws and best practices to help ensure that adoptees have access to their full story. You can see just how important this is https://imprintnews.org/top-stories/amara-digs-into-past-adoptions/61085

Reflections from a volunteer: "Looking at old baby pictures, reading through interviews with adoptive and birth parents, and scanning over the minute details of every unique adoption, it is hard not to feel an intimate connection to the people whose information is contained in the inconspicuous manila folders. Having access to this confidential and very personal information is an immense responsibility."

If you are detail oriented and desire to support our quest towards full transparency, volunteering for The Adoption Files Initiative may be just the right fit for you. All volunteers must be at least 19 years of age and commit to 12 hours per month (during office hours) in our Seattle Headquarters.

This volunteer is an in-person volunteer role. All volunteers are expected to follow COVID-19 safety protocol by providing confirmation of vaccination and being vigilant about symptoms and exposure, currently masking is at your discretion.
