ORGANIZATION: Fresh Approach

Nutrition Education Program

Our Nutrition Education program classes have been developed with the goal of helping low-income individuals, youth, and families gain necessary knowledge and skills to make better-informed choices about what they eat.

Classes conclude with cooking demos that allow everyone to share and taste new healthy recipes, and to discuss ways to modify recipes to add more vegetables and tailor flavors to individual preferences. All participants receive health monitoring throughout the program, and participate in practical, hands-on activities about healthy eating. Qualifying participants also receive "prescription" fruit and vegetable vouchers at each class, with exact amounts based on family size, to spend on produce at local farmers’ markets.

Nutrition Education Classroom and Outreach Assistant (Food As Medicine Classes)

Volunteers will assist with classroom set-up and clean-up including prepping produce, handing out class materials, conducting surveys with class participants, cooking and handing out food demo samples, washing dishes, and taking/posting pictures on social media.

Volunteers will also have the opportunity to attend outreach events in the same area as their class. An ideal candidate would have some nutrition experience or interest in pursuing the field of nutrition. Preference is given to those who speak Spanish or have a desire to learn or practice Spanish.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to create long-term change in local food systems, by connecting California communities with healthy food from California farmers and expanding knowledge about food and nutrition.

Description

Our programs empower families to make sustainable lifestyle changes by expanding their nutrition, cooking, and gardening skills, and by boosting their access to local, affordable produce.

Local farms benefit, too, as our programs make it possible for small farms to sell in communities that would otherwise lack access to their products, while helping farmers diversify their sales through guaranteed weekly orders.

This grassroots community empowerment has a ripple effect that supports small family farms, promotes sustainability and responsible stewardship in agriculture, breaks down systemic barriers, and strengthens the local economy - all while growing community interest in healthy eating.

We believe that everyone should have equal access to healthy food, and that the health of our communities and the livelihood of our local farmers should go hand-in-hand.
