Project Backpack provides age and gender appropriate backpacks for kids removed from their homes in cases of domestic violence, abuse, neglect, homelessness, or natural disaster. We partner with local police departments and departments of social services and other not for profits who interact with the kids at the time they are displaced, or soon thereafter to deliver the backpacks to the kids. The backpacks contain all new items, including necessities, like toiletries, socks, underwear, diapers, and sleep shirts, as well as comfort items like books, toys, games, hats, scarves, gloves, school supplies, and costume jewellery. We serve from birth to age 19.
We also invite the public to come and help us pack at the warehouse. We encourage folks to bring their kids from age 6 and up, as we believe an equally important part of our mission is to expose kids to community service and giving back. Currently, we are open from 1 to 4 on Thursdays and most Saturdays from 10 to noon. We have recently experienced an uptick in demand for both backpacks, and folks wanting to come in and help. Right now, Project Backpack is an all-volunteer organization, with no paid employees. The volunteer we seek would need to be willing to be extensively trained in warehouse operations, and overseeing packing sessions. They would also need to be flexible on schedule, to include evenings, and Saturday/Sunday sessions from time to time, on an as-needed basis. All hours required would be requested well in advance in most cases. To the extent that operations continue at current level, would expect this to become a part-time job within 6 months.

Description
Project Backpack is an all-volunteer organization. We have a warehouse in Bridgeton where we pack backpacks for children removed from their homes in cases of domestic violence, neglect, natural disaster, homelessness and other similar situations. The backpacks are age and gender appropriate and contain necessities (think toiletries, diapers, underwear, shirts, socks) and comfort items like toys, books, schools supplies, stuffed animals, and seasonal items like scarves, gloves, sunglasses, baseball caps, etc. We distribute the backpacks by partnering with police departments, departments of family services and other not for profits that interact with the child at, or close to the time they are removed from their home. We invite the public to help us pack, and welcome brownie troops, scout groups, school groups, church/temple groups, employer groups, families and friends to schedule a packing session at the warehouse.
