ORGANIZATION: Shreveport Green

AmeriCorps VISTA is a branch of National Service that focuses on building the capacity of non-profit organizations and public agencies to help them more effectively generate the commitment of private sector resources, encourage volunteer service at the local level, and empower individuals and communities. AmeriCorps VISTA members serve full-time for one-year terms. VISTA members receive a living allowance on a biweekly basis, which totals to $12,277.72 for the year-long term. Upon completion of their term, VISTA members receive an education award of $6,095.00 or a cash stipend of $1,800.

The goal of this VISTA project is to address food insecurity in Shreveport’s food desert neighborhoods by building the capacity of Shreveport Green’s Mobile Market program to reach a greater number of beneficiaries more effectively.

To accomplish this goal, the VISTA will:
- develop rapport with community members
- assess community needs and motivations through surveys and one-on-one interviews
- develop outreach strategies and marketing materials
- manage social media presence
- develop event reminder system for beneficiaries via text message, email, or app notification
- recruit and train volunteers
- cultivate partnerships with potential new service sites to expand scope of project
- develop partnerships with local chefs, farmers, and nutritionists
- develop informational materials such as cookbooks and nutritional pamphlets
- help community members to make their own favorite recipes healthier
- promote the project to community leaders
