The National Sexual Assault Online Hotline, operated by RAINN, provides live, secure, anonymous crisis support to the growing number of people who prefer communicating online through a simple instant message format, giving those affected by sexual assault a safe place to receive support. Volunteers are needed to support visitors who come to the hotline between 9pm-2am ET.

As a college student, volunteering can open many opportunities for you both academically and professionally. Relationships made and skills developed by volunteering with crisis intervention work can make a great addition to your resume, graduate work, or first job application!

As an Online Hotline volunteer you:

  • Provide much-needed support to victims of sexual assault and their loved ones
  • Interact with experts in the field and an array of staff members
  • Volunteer from the comfort of your home
  • Get experience with problem-solving and active listening

Volunteer Program and Expectations

  • Be at least 18 years old or older.
  • Must pass a criminal background check provided by RAINN at no-cost to you
  • Required to volunteer a minimum of 10 hours of direct service on the Online Hotline each month.
  • Commit to at least 18 months of volunteer service.
  • Adhere to and practice RAINN policies.

Volunteer Training

Individuals who are interested in our volunteer program can expect to go through the following application and training steps:

  • Submit a complete application.
  • Complete and pass a 20-hour online training.
  • Attend and participate at a two-day in-person training.
    • Applicants will need to register for in-person training after completing and passing online training.
    • Applicants will also need to attend a three-hour debriefing session after the two-day training. This is done through an online meeting.
  • Access to online and in-person training is free of charge. Trainees are responsible for securing their own transportation and lodging for the in-person training.
  • Have supervised sessions with a licensed supervisor for final approval of volunteer status.

RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) is the nation's largest anti-sexual violence organization. RAINN created and operates the National Sexual Assault Hotline (800.656.HOPE, online.rainn.org y rainn.org/es) in partnership with more than 1,000 local sexual assault service providers across the country and operates the DoD Safe Helpline for the Department of Defense. RAINN also carries out programs to prevent sexual violence, help survivors, and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice.
