America SCORES Chicago

Every year, America SCORES Chicago hosts its annual Red Carpet Poetry Slam. This unique fundraising event features food and drinks, a silent auction, a paddle raise, and live performances by SCORES 3rd-8th grade poets. This is shaping up to be our biggest event yet, meaning that we are in need of volunteers to help ensure the event is a success. Volunteer roles include:
- Greeting and coat check
- Registration
- Monitoring the silent auction tables
- Paddle raise spotters
- Check out and silent auction runners

The event begins at 5:30 and ends around 9pm. We would like for volunteers, if available, to arrive at 3 to help with set up.

Mission Statement

America SCORES Chicago strives to inspire urban youth to lead healthy lives, be engaged students, and have the confidence and character to make a difference in the world.

Description

America SCORES Chicago uses soccer, poetry and service-learning to engage underserved CPS students on the City's west side. Our core after school program serves over 500 3rd-8th grade students.

  • 1 in 3 children in the communities we serve are overweight. SCORES offers students a soccer and health curriculum, resulting in ten times the amount of physical fitness opportunities available to their peers.
  • 50 percent of the students in the communities we serve read below the state standard level. SCORES ties reading to creative writing and poetry. Poet-athletes show statistically significant improvement in literacy skills each season.
  • 1.5 million children in Illinois are left unsupervised after school, when juvenile crime rates triple. SCORES offers over 200 hours of after-school programming in a safe and supportive environment.
