Share your talents in mathematics or education this summer with middle school students from Prince George's County through #MAP (Math Achievers Program), a 6-week distance learning math enrichment program of SEAC, Inc. (Seaton Empowering Action in the Community, Inc).

Position Description:

SEAC, Inc. is seeking college or post-secondary students who are mathematics or education majors/minors; intend to major/minor in mathematics or education; or have a proficiency in and enjoy mathematics. Approximately 15 Student Math Coaches are needed to work on a virtual basis with approximately 30 middle school students over a 6-week time period, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 pm-8:30 pm (12 sessions); from July 7-August 13. One or two virtual field trips or other interactive activities may be included during the program, to enhance learning. Virtual sessions will be conducted in both large and small groups and are designed to help sudents improve their math skills and concepts.

Essential Skills and Criteria:

  • Mathematics competency, interpersonal communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Familiarity or experience with distance learning and instruction.
  • Knowledge and use of math tools and basic computer technology skills.
  • Patience, flexibility, enthusiasm, energy and ability to create a positive and motivating virtual environment for students.
  • Punctual and have good attendance.
  • Demonstrate empathy, humility, and respect for others.
  • Previous experience working with middle school students, preferred, but not required.

Key Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Provide mathematics reinforcement for middle school students in math concepts and skills.
  • Assist students with math concepts and skills, as outlined in the curriculum including activities designed by #MAP Academic Advisory Committee.
  • Build rapport with students; encourage and support students to keep them motivated and ready to learn.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with and between students; report to Program Coordinator.
  • Attend mandatory Orientation and debrief after each instructional session.
  • Perform other duties consistent with being a Student Math Coach.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • College or post-secondary student in good standing (Distinctive consideration will be given for High School students with high capacity and interest in mathematics.)
  • Ability to work with young students, Program Coordinator, and others of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, racial and ethnic backgrounds, including those with different levels of academic preparation and varying physical and learning abilities.
  • Must provide own computer, laptop or table with a stable internet connection, security, and clear audio/video capability.

Stipend: $15.00 per hour; no benefits.

Our name, Seaton Empowering Action in the Community, exemplifies the organization mission of service to the community through a philanthropic structure.

Recognizing the strength of partnerships, SEAC, Inc. maximizes its resources by partnering with schools, civic associations, and other non-profit organization in conducting its programs, and tailors them to best meet the needs of the young people its serve.

For example, SEAC,Inc. has partnered with a local civic association and a national fraternity to provide food baskets to needy families at Thanksgiving and Easter, and is currently partnering with a Parent, Teachers and Student Association of a local middle school on a math enrichment program.
