ORGANIZATION: Goodwill of the Southern Alleghenies

We are the adult education provider in Cambria County. We offered GED preparation as well as remediation in math and reading. We are funded by the PA Department of Education and the classes are free to students. There is an instructor in each class but we are to have classroom aides in there as well. The aide is not required to create anything or do any work with students outside of the classroom. The aide's role is to assist the instructor with in-class work, as well as work one-on-one with the lower-functioning students. We have a coordinator for volunteers who would ensure that the aide has any necessary training.

Mission Statement

To empower individuals and families with employment barriers to achieve their fullest potential in the community through work services.

Description

Goodwill of the Southern Alleghenies (formerly Goodwill Industries of the Conemaugh Valley, incorporated in 1962) is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization headquartered in Johnstown, Pennsylvania serving the counties of Bedford, Blair, Cambria, Huntingdon, Indiana, Somerset, and a portion of Westmoreland. Revenue from the sale of donated goods in the organization’s 10 Goodwill Retail Stores supports its mission of empowering individuals and families with employment barriers to achieve their fullest potential in the community through work services. Adult and youth services include education and career services, job placement, postemployment supports, and psychiatric rehabilitation. Goodwill of the Southern Alleghenies is an independent, community-based member organization of Goodwill Industries International, a 179-member network in the U.S., Canada, and 13 other countries

When most people hear the name "Goodwill," they think of the stores that sell items donated by the public. But that’s only part of the larger great story. The lesser-known, but very critical role that Goodwill plays is to provide services for people with barriers.

And the greatest financial support for these in-demand services comes from the role for which the Goodwill name is best known − the sale of donated goods.
