ORGANIZATION: The Food Literacy Project

  • 8 people are interested

The Food Literacy Project provides transformative learning experiences through direct experience and learning by discovery at Oxmoor and Iroquois farms. During the school year, we invite students to have positive experiences growing and cooking healthful foods on working vegetables farms. During on-farm programs, youth are invited to get their hands dirty through harvesting and preparing vegetables while using all of their senses to explore their environment. The Garden & Program Support Volunteer is essential to the on-farm programs in order to help with setup before, reorganization during, and cleanup after the club. Duties may include:

  • Assisting with on-farm programming needs including cutting vegetables, setting up game materials, washing dishes, restocking supplies, and cleaning up after the program.
  • Assisting in maintenance of the Youth Learning Garden and other program areas.
  • Preparing materials for students to take home.

About The Food Literacy Project

Mission Statement

Youth transforming their communities through food, farming, and the land.

Description

Sharing its home with an 8-acre organic vegetable farm, the Food Literacy Project exists to reveal the power of discovering real food. Our comprehensive Field-to-Fork program consists of student farm-based education, youth development, afterschool programs, professional development, and community engagement to bring all people in the community closer to the origin of the food. We believe in a hands-on experiential approach to education, believing once youth become participants in their own food system, they are more likely to try new things and enjoy eating fresh fruits and vegetables.
