What's your favorite summer memory?

Last year we put on our very first Summer Opportunities Workshop with the goal of helping our students explore a new hobby or interest.

All of our students will be the first in their families to graduate from college and are on a 10-12 year journey with us. Our students are coming from the Mission and Excelsior and are described by their First Graduate Middle School Advisors as silly, energetic, inquisitive, and ambitious. During this workshop, volunteers will help our graduating 8th graders explore and research summer programs in the city that will allow them to create new summer memories.

Thanks to our awesome volunteers last summer our students were able to participate in camps/programs that allowed them to further explore their creative side and some of them were even able to create music videos, play a new sport, learn how to swim, and take a photography course, all free of charge to their family!

Goals for students:

  • Students will discover a new interest and will practice researching summer programs that they would like to participate in
  • With the help of volunteers, students will create a draft of their Youth Opportunities Scholarship Essay that will cover the summer program fee

Volunteer Responsibilities

  • Volunteers will work 1:1 with an FG Middle School student and assist them with their summer program research by helping them narrow down their top three choices
  • Volunteers will help students brainstorm ideas to use for their Youth Opportunities Scholarship essay draft

Support:

  • FG staff will be present throughout the entire event to support all volunteers
  • Volunteers will receive all materials a week prior to the event including logistics

To Sign up:

  • Visit our volunteer page (https://firstgraduate.org/volunteer/) and sign-up up by clicking on our Volunteer Calendar located at the bottom of the page
