POSITION TITLE: Making Strides Survivor and Caregiver Lead

Making Strides events celebrate and honor breast cancer survivors and caregivers, educate the public about prevention and detection to reduce risk of the disease, and raise funds to help end breast cancer.

Role Description:

Breast cancer survivors are the celebrities of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. The Survivor and Caregiver Lead is responsible for recruiting, recognizing, and engaging survivors and caregivers from area communities for the event. This person is responsible for planning and implementing all aspects of the Survivor (and Caregiver) Tent day of the event, Survivor activities and/or gifts at the Kickoff, and will work with the staff partner to support survivor team recruitment and engagement. Caregivers are also a critical piece, and most are either currently caring for their loved one, have cared for them in the past, or are going through a loss of their loved one and need support from those around them- specifically other caregivers who understand what they are going through. This volunteer lead will work with the ACS staff partner to identify key opportunities, and additional responsibilities may include organizing the survivor and caregiver area during the event.

Committee Member Expectations:

  • When available, Meet monthly with the planning committee
  • If possible, attend and be available to help at the kickoff, setup day and the walk day
  • Sign up as an individual or team on the event website
  • Be enthusiastic!

Core Responsibilities:

Recruitment

  • Organize a survivor team recruitment effort
  • Implement a plan to outreach to current survivors and caregivers to invite them to the kickoff and encourage their participation as a Team Leader. Additionally, they can be encouraged to invite fellow survivors and caregivers to the walk and kickoff
  • Outreach to current/new survivors through various methods including phone calls, email blasts, and community outreach
  • Develop relationships with and serve as the point of contact for organizations that serve or connect with survivors and caregivers such as hospitals, treatment centers, support groups, faith-based groups or organizations, employers, etc., and work with these organizations to develop a recruitment plan at their facility /organization

Requirements:

  • Individuals must be organized
  • Individuals must be able to collaborate with others
  • Individuals must be comfortable speaking to community members and survivors via phone, email, and/or in person

Time Commitment:

1 Year Commitment

Monthly Committee Meetings (can participate from home)

January-November: 4-8 hours/month
