Wanted: More Awesome Board Members!
Meals on Wheels Chicago is currently accepting applications for membership on its board.

Position: Board members are the fiduciary stewards who steer the organization towards a sustainable future by adopting sound, ethical, and legal governance and financial management policies, as well as by making sure the nonprofit has adequate resources to advance its mission. MEALS ON WHEELS CHICAGO (MOWC) is governed by a board of directors drawn from a cross-section of business, medicine, law, and local government. The Board will support the work of MOWC and provide mission-based leadership and strategic governance. While day-to-day operations are led by MOWC’s Executive Director (ED), the Board-ED relationship is a partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the Board is both critical and expected. Specific Board Member responsibilities include:

Leadership, governance and oversight

  • Reviewing outcomes and metrics created by MOWC for evaluating its impact, and regularly measuring its performance and effectiveness using those metrics; reviewing agenda and supporting materials prior to board and committee meetings.
  • Approving MOWC’s annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions; being informed of, and meeting all, legal and fiduciary responsibilities.
  • Contributing to an annual performance evaluation of the ED.
  • Assisting the board chair, governance committee, and ED in identifying and recruiting other Board Members.
  • Serving on committees or task forces and taking on special assignments.
  • Representing MOWC’s to stakeholders; acting as an ambassador for the organization.
  • Ensuring MOWC’s commitment to a diverse board and staff that reflects the communities MOWC’s serves.

Fundraising

MOWC’s Board Members will consider MOWC a philanthropic priority and make annual gifts that reflect that priority. So that MOWC can credibly solicit contributions from foundations, organizations, and individuals, MOWC’s expects to have 100 percent of Board Members make an annual contribution that is commensurate with their capacity, at a minimum of the board give/get. It is additionally expected that board members will attend and participate in the success of MOWC’s special events.

Qualifications

This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about Meals on Wheels Chicago’s mission and who has a track record of board leadership. Selected Board Members will have achieved leadership stature in business, government, philanthropy or the nonprofit sector. Their accomplishments will allow them to attract other well-qualified, high-performing Board Members. Ideal Candidates Will Have The Following Qualifications:

  • Extensive professional experience with significant executive leadership accomplishments in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector.
  • A commitment to and understanding of MOWC’s beneficiaries, preferably based on experience.

Description

ABOUT MEALS ON WHEELS CHICAGO : The holidays can be a really tough time for those who are homebound because they remember their loved ones who have passed away. Just hearing the holiday song they used to love to sing with their spouse only intensifies their feelings of isolation. More than 30 years ago, a group of community leaders were shocked to learn that Chicago’s senior citizens were not receiving a meal on holidays - when these seniors most acutely felt alone and isolated. As a result, a partnership was formed in 1987 and Meals on Wheels Chicago was founded. On Thanksgiving Day, 1988, the very first holiday meal was delivered to 1,218 homebound senior citizens and a tradition was born.

Thirty years on, Meals on Wheels Chicago continues to work on eliminating hunger and isolation by delivering festive meals on major holidays, reminding our older neighbors they haven’t been forgotten. In the meantime, we have expanded our services to include home-delivered meals to people with disabilities and volunteer opportunities to socialize with our elder neighbors at Chicago regional senior centers.
