Early Release Teen Service Day

ORGANIZATION: Raleigh Parks Volunteer Services Program

** IN ORDER TO REGISTER AS A VOLUNTEER FOR THIS EVENT, YOU MUST EMAIL MARY.OWENS@RALEIGHNC.GOV AND SHE WILL SEND YOU THE REGISTRATION LINK.**

Event Description:
It's an early release day, so come knock out a few of those service hours, break a sweat, and have fun with your peers! Spread mulch on a new Reptile & Amphibian coverboard trail or remove invasive plants. When we're finished, we'll have hot chocolate and snacks.

Volunteer Duties: Volunteers will EITHER

1. Use wheelbarrows, shovels and rakes to haul and spread mulch, or;

2. Use pruners and loppers to remove invasive plants.

Volunteers will be able to choose which activity they prefer.

Volunteer Impact: Removing invasive plants is critical in preserving our wild spaces (yes, even in downtown Raleigh!) for native wildlife. For volunteers, it is instantly gratifying to to see what a difference can be made in the landscape of the wetland. Other volunteers will be mulching our new coverboard trail. This trail will be used as a citizen science activity for studying reptiles, amphibians, and other critters that choose the boards for shelter and protection.

Work Environment: All volunteer work will be outside. Participants should come dressed to work outdoors, in clothing that can get messy or scratched. Also, wear close toed shoes. Sneakers or work boots are recommended. A refillable water bottle is recommended. There will be in a restroom on site.

Volunteer Requirements: This opportunity is open to teens in high school. Volunteers must be 14 - 18 years of age. All volunteers must have a release form signed by a parent or guardian.

Special Instructions: All tools, gloves, and waterproof boots (if needed) will be supplied.

Group Registration Information: Registration as a volunteer is first come, first served. If you are interested in registering as a group, please use the "Register as a Group" button. You will then need to email mary.owens@raleighnc.gov the names of the volunteers from your organization who plan on attending. This is to ensure groups are not reserving spots that they do not have actual volunteers for.

Per department policy, this volunteer opportunity is not to be used towards court-appointed/ suggested community service hours.
