American Red Cross - Eastern Pennsylvania Region

  • Responsibilities Perform mental health screening/informal assessments.
    Provide emotional care and support.
    Provide crisis intervention.
    Educate workers and clients about emotional recovery and effective coping techniques.
    Make referrals for additional mental health services, based on guidance from supervisor.
    Seek guidance from supervisor as necessary and appropriate.
    Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor.
    Follow and implement requests and direction received from your supervisor.


  • Time Commitment

    Varies with volunteer’s interest and availability from a few hours (local service) to several weeks (service outside home chapter)

  • QualificationsMust have graduate degree and current license or certification in a mental health discipline: social work (LCSW), psychiatry, psychology, counseling, psychiatric nursing, marriage and family therapy. (Note: graduate students and persons with graduate degrees who are pursuing a license/certification may qualify as DMH Trainees; please see that job description).
    • Completion of Red Cross training in disaster mental health.
    • Able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, including being able to write legibly when completing forms.
    • Ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks simultaneously.
    • Proficiency in using computers.
    • Able to promote, develop and maintain productive and amicable working relationships with diverse individuals and groups, including peers and supervisors.
    • Be sensitive in human interactions to diversity and inclusiveness.
    • Must be flexible and adaptable in various situations and work settings
    • Successful completion of Pennsylvania ACT 153 clearances.
  • Relationships

    Work closely with Disaster Mental Health staff and volunteers and develop good working relationships with all chapter staff, volunteers, and partners.

  • Length of Appointment

    Once certification is obtained and training is complete, may remain active as long as required training is updated and mental health license is current.

  • Development Opportunities

    In addition to local service, DMH workers who become proficient in disaster mental health services (and are interested/able to travel), may be deployed for major disasters in other parts of the region, the state, and/or the country.

  • Requirements

    Orientation to American Red Cross

    • Completion of Red Cross training in disaster mental health.
  • Purpose Help adults and children cope with the emotional and environmental impact following a disaster. This includes supporting all Red Cross workers (paid and volunteer) and all of our partners.
