Mission Statement

The Education Department of Dauphin County Prison seeks to assist in the rehabilitation of the inmate population by providing educational opportunities, employability, and life skills so that they may have the tools necessary to become productive members of society upon re-entry to the community.

Description

The Education Department of Dauphin County Prison provides adult basic education, secondary education, and English as a second language instruction to incarcerated individuals (both pre-trial and sentenced) who do not have a high school diploma or who English is their second language and wish to increase their proficiency. It is our goal to create lifelong learners who possess the skills needed to transition to training, post-secondary education, or meaningful employment when re-entering the community.

Volunteer Opportunity

Volunteer tutors provide one-on-one or small group instruction to students for a minimum of three hours per week. They must have a bachelor’s degree or be participating in an AmeriCorps program. Volunteer tutors are required to have written lesson plans that will be provided for all tutoring/small group sessions and should work with tutor coordinator to review goals and adjust student placement, as needed. Volunteer tutors will be provided initial tutor training and additional professional learning opportunities while at the program.

Requirements:

To begin tutoring, candidates must complete a drug screening and cannot have a criminal record for Dauphin County Prison.

Immigration and Refugee Services is a Catholic Charities program located in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. We provide a wide range of social and educational services to immigrants, refugees, visitors, and non-English speakers. There are four main services provided by Immigration and Refugee Services: refugee resettlement, immigrant and refugee women empowerment, refugee job placement, and English as a Second Language courses. Services are offered free of charge to all individuals.
