Can you imagine being unable to read this website, a street sign, instructions on a bottle of medicine, or even a note from your child's teacher? Have you ever wanted to make a real difference in the community? By volunteering with the Literacy Council of Northern Virginia, you can change the lives of adults who want to develop basic reading, writing, and English speaking skills.
To learn how you can get involved, come to LCNV's next Volunteer Orientation on Saturday, December 7 at 10:30am at the Sherwood Regional Library in Alexandria.
With the help of volunteers who serve as teachers, class aides, tutors and testers, the Literacy Council is able to teach thousands of English language learners at 15 different sites across Northern Virginia. Prior teaching experience is not required to get involved -- training, curriculum, and support will be provided! LCNV also seeks committed office volunteers to assist with logistics, outreach, special events and data entry.

Mission Statement
The mission of the English Empowerment Center is to teach adults the basic skills of reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English so they can access employment and educational opportunities and more fully and equitably participate in the community.
Description
Established in 1962, the English Empowerment Center (formerly Literacy Council of Northern Virginia) has over 60 years of experience in English language instruction. Each year, EEC serves nearly 1,500 learners, many of whom are struggling to get by with minimal English-language skills. Using today’s best practices for adult learning and second language acquisition, we offer skills-based instruction in both in-person and virtual classrooms. EEC's classes are inexpensive and offered at various times, making them accessible to the largest number of adults with the most urgent language needs.
