Whether you're interested in Heritage, Tourism, Events or working with Children, this is a great way to build up some valuable (and CV-enhancing) experience with the largest voluntary conservation organisation in Europe.
We welcome large numbers of visitors into Petworth on 363 days a year, but there are certain times where we see those numbers skyrocket. We are committed to giving "Exceptional Service, every time, for everyone", but this gets trickier at these peak periods with increased demand on the property and the people who work and volunteer here. Seasonal Support Volunteers help provide that extra operational support at these times to help make sure that the memories visitors make at Petworth are always the best ones.
You will work closely with the Visitor Experience Team to help deliver onsite events and family-based activities. Each week is very different, so one week you could be crafting away ready for Christmas, the next you might be welcoming and engaging our younger visitors with an Easter Egg hunt. There are a wide variety of seasonal visitor activities that you can choose to support with, at times of the year that best suit you.
This role is purely voluntary and this arrangement is not meant to be a legally binding one or an employment contract.
Expenses
As a volunteer you will not be paid. We will though ensure you don’t lose out financially through volunteering so will cover your agreed out-of-pocket expenses, such as travel between your home and where you volunteer.
Benefits
We're pleased to be able to offer benefits and discounts, on certain products and services, to volunteers who hold a Volunteer Card provided by National Trust Enterprises and our corporate partners. Volunteer cards are one of the ways we say a great big thank you to volunteers, and this card entitles you to various benefits such as free entry to National Trust Properties across the UK, and 20% off in National Trust shops and restaurants in England.
More opportunities with Petworth House and Park

Mission Statement
The National Trust was founded in 1895 to promote and look after places of historic beauty permanently for the benefit of the nation across England, Wales and Northern Island. Our core purpose is to look after special places for ever, for everyone.
Description
A stately mansion nestled in the South Downs housing the finest art collection in the care of the National Trust.
Petworth has a rich and varied history waiting to be discovered. Stroll through state rooms saturated with internationally important paintings by artists such as Van Dyck, Reynolds, Titian and Blake together with classical and neo-classical sculptures. Follow in the footsteps of JMW Turner who spent long periods at the mansion under the patronage of the 3rd Earl of Egremont, and whose paintings of Petworth park can be seen at Petworth today.
The servants’ quarters by contrast offer a glimpse of life 'below stairs’. Step inside some of these rooms and imagine the hustle and bustle of servant life.
The landscape gives every impression of being totally natural but in reality nothing is further from the truth. The park was transformed in the 1750s and early 1760s by Lancelot 'Capability’ Brown.
