About H.Y.P.E. to Empower, Inc.

H.Y.P.E. to Empower, Inc. our overall mission aims to transform the lives of children, youth, young adults, families, and communities living with HIV. H.Y.P.E.’s targeted population are HIV positive children, youth, and young adults between the ages of 13-30 years old, and their families affected by HIV.

Our comprehensive and relevant initiatives at H.Y.P.E. involve community services, HIV-education, academic education, counseling, medical advocacy, social and professional support, and self and social empowerment.

In addition to our direct initiatives for HIV positive individuals and communities, we also aim to provide our skills and expertise to persons, groups, organizations, and businesses who wish to utilize the H.Y.P.E. model in targeting areas where they want to make a difference.

Organization Background

On March 28, 2011, on his nineteenth birthday, Robert LaMar Yarborough (LaMar) was diagnosed with AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome). In December of the same year, LaMar also received news he was diagnosed with Cancer. Despite these life-changing events LaMar prevailed. With much prayer and strong will he beat cancer and became HIV undetectable (controlled). Living with the virus, LaMar grew an urge to work hands-on with HIV/AIDS. He started volunteering with different organizations such as the Ponce Center (IDP), Camp High Five, Emory (Pipe Line), Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. along with various organizations who work with infectious diseases. Outside of these organizations, LaMar served as the Program Coordinator for the Atlanta based LOVE Coalition (Lifting our Voices to Equality, Inc.), a certified tester with The Empowerment Resource Center.

After two years of living with the virus, LaMar formed his organization, HIV+ Youth that Pledge to Empower Themselves and Others or (H.Y.P.E). H.Y.P.E's inception materialized from inspiration, love, and compassion. As the founder and Executive Director of this Non-Profit, LaMar was inspired to start his vibrant organization because he did not want anyone else to look at his or her diagnosis negatively. Instead, he wanted to give hope.

Our Mission

Build and grow programs that empower youth to succeed individually and flourish as leaders to transform the lives of children, youth, young adults, families, and communities living with HIV.

Our Vision

We envision empowered youth who live sustainable lifestyles. While mentoring and cultivating youth to manage their health, finances, and social responsibilities H.Y.P.E. will equip them with the educational and leadership capacities to be leaders in their communities, communities affected by HIV, and to promote the interests of these communities.

Our Impact

We Enhance Education and Foster Financial Stability: H.Y.P.E. works to support and provide youth with sufficient educational programs and resources to hone their skills, improve their knowledge, which will let them master various transitional skills, and pursue their professional endeavors. In doing so, our consumers will gain skills to be financially stable.

We Speared-Head Communities: At H.Y.P.E. we work hard to collaborate and partner with organizations, companies, and communities to enhance the lives of children, youth, and young adults living with HIV. In doing so, we have partnered and calibrated with some of the best:

Georgia Equality, (Philip Rush Center) Living Room Atlanta, AAOI, (Atlanta Area Outreach Initiative) Henry County Schools High Scholl GSA, (Gay-Straight Alliance) Planned Parent Hood, Emory University (Public Health and Black Public Health)

Term:

Board members are expected to serve three years, which may be renewed up to a maximum of three consecutive terms, pending approval of the board.

Time commitment:

Monthly Time Commitment for Board Members. We at H.Y.P.E. to Empower, Inc. Consider our self a working board that means some months may consist of more personal time than other months, that is why we use the language (at max).

It is an expectation that all Board Members participate in the following activities:

4 Hours (at max) Board meetings one time per month

4 hours (at max) of committee meetings one time per month

2 hours (at max) for twice-monthly Board / Committee Update call

All Board Members will be present for in-person meetings and phone calls. Members should include updates on meetings with Sponsors, Donors, and partners, as well as, provide an overview of any community events and receptions attended on behalf of other organizations. Additionally, especially with H.Y.P.E. to Empower, Inc. still in infancy, it is expected that members will participate in ad-hoc board meetings and ad-hoc committees, as needed. As appropriate, members are expected to advocate on behalf of the organization to secure community support and funding for programs.

As it is hard to quantify the time and efforts needed, an estimate of the time commitment per month, on the high-end, is 60 hours. As the organization becomes more solvent and programs are officially launched, the time commitment is likely to decrease over time as a strong organizational foundation is being built. The time estimate is being provided not to dissuade individual interest in being a Board Member, but to shift interest into action with a commitment of time to the organization.

Meeting (s):

The board of directors meets January through December on the last Sunday of the month,

2:00 p.m., at Georgia Equality (Philip Rush Center) in annex building in the back.

Committees meet on average one time per month, pending their respective work agenda.

Meeting year: January-December
