Connect to the natural world at Mass Horticultural Society's morning of service

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: Massachusetts Horticultural Society

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.

Join Massachusetts Horticultural Society on Wednesday, January 23rd and honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through service in your community. Meet new people, unite in service, and support our mission to connect people to the natural world. We will offer two different volunteer projects:

Seed Library Volunteers: Join Hannah Traggis, our Senior Horticulturist, in the warmth of the Putnam Horticultural Building - no experience necessary - and help us clean, sort and package seeds to support Massachusetts Horticultural Society's Seed Library. Our Seed Library allows individuals, teachers, libraries and community organizations to 'check out' seeds to grow and share them with others. Our goals are to preserve our native plant habitats, help communities grow and eat wholesome food, and strengthen our food system.

Painting Volunteers: Join Dan Brooks, our Director of Operations, and help prep and paint pedestals to be used at the Boston Flower Show in March. Mass Hort manages the floral design and amateur horticulture competitions at the flower show - it's our largest outreach opportunity of the year - and we need help preparing for our exhibits prior to the show.

When: Wednesday, January 23, 2019 - 9:30 am - 12:00 pm

Where to meet: The Gardens at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street, Wellesley, MA

Seed Library Volunteers: Please park at and meet Hannah Traggis in the Putnam Building at the start of your shift. To get to the Putnam building, enter the Elm Bank Reservation on Cheney Drive, crossing the bridge and veering right on the one-way road. Follow the road past all parking lots and soccer fields until the road comes to an end at the stop sign. Take a left at the stop sign and continue past the Mass Hort parking lot, keeping to the right, and the Putnam Building will be on the right after the greenhouses.

Painting volunteers:Please park at our main parking lot and meet Dan Brooks in front of the Hunnewell Building at the start of your shift. You will be painting in a barn with limited heat, so please wear warm clothes that are also appropriate for painting.
