Teen Line is a confidential telephone helpline for teenage callers. Teenagers call this hotline when they are facing issues of any size and to speak with someone their own age who is non-judgmental and there to listen. Teen Line’s trained Listeners help callers clarify their concerns, define and discuss options available, and make referrals to community resources, if needed. They staff the lines, and respond to emails and texts, every evening from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. PST.

To qualify, you must live in the Los Angeles area and be in or entering the 9th,10th, or 11th grade (you cannot be entering 12th grade for the summer training).

We have a careful screening process that includes the completion of a 5-page application, and individual and group interviews. Volunteers are unpaid, although you may get community service credit at school.

Mission Statement

Teen Line is a peer-to-peer helpline for teenagers. Trained teenage volunteers answer phone calls, text messages, and emails every evening from 6:00pm to 10:00pm. Teens can call 800-852-8336 from 6pm to 10pm PST or text "TEEN" to 839863 from 6pm to 9pm PST> The Teen Line volunteers who answer the calls, text messages, and message boards are Southern California teenagers who have been specially trained. They won't judge you or give advice - their job is to listen to your feelings and help you to clarify your concerns, define the options available to you, and help you make positive decisions. No problem is too small, too large, or too shocking for the TEEN LINE volunteers.

Description

Many teenagers have no place to go for help. Intimidated by parents and adult authority, and embarrassed by their problems, they struggle alone with their demons. Often they get it wrong, and sometimes they get it tragically wrong. Teen Line was established in 1981 to help them "get it right". For more than 10,000 troubled teenagers each year, Teen Line has been the place to call to talk about problems. Teen Line does not offer therapy or advice or ongoing relationships. It does provide a caring relationship within which to consider the next step. It offers HOPE.
