The City Tutors (CT) is looking for tutors to provide in-class academic support in math for Henry Street's Workforce development program for Adult Basic Education and High School Equivalency classes for the semester. Embedded Tutoring will run in the evening from 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM, Monday - Thursday. Tutors are asked to commit 3 hours of their time a week.
This a great opportunity for:
- working professionals who wish to support their community
- students who are majoring (or who have recently graduated) in the course area and who wish to enhance their content knowledge and/or grow their professional experience
As an embedded tutor, you would collaborate with an instructor to improve students’ performance while being supported and guided by an experienced academic support professional. You would identify and support students who are struggling, participate during the lecture to augment the class topic discussions, and provide feedback to students so that they may improve their fundamental understanding of the material. You might also design assignments, identify/track students who are struggling and create differentiated instruction as the need arises. You will be supported throughout this process by the City Tutors staff.
All tutors are also expected to complete a three session comprehensive, professional training regimen. 3 hours of live training, plus another hour and a half for orientation. This is a commitment of 4.5 hours of live training, over the course of the semester.
Training days will be determined based on your schedule and that of the Tutor Trainer's.
CT's tutoring program has been successful in helping students gain access to support that they otherwise would not have received, given their limited time spent on campus. Having a tutor in the class early in the semester will allow us to employ strategies to reduce withdrawals and student failure rates. Your work with us would help the students’ overall subject area performance, and help us improve this educational support model, reaching more students and departments with comprehensive academic support.

About The City Tutors
92-24 Queens Boulevard, Rego Park, NY 11374, US
The City Tutors (CT) is a NYC wide volunteer tutoring and mentoring hub that ensures historically underserved communities have equitable access to resources that are fundamental to educational and professional success.
Our vision is to create a hub where any New Yorker can leverage their academic and professional skills and content knowledge to uplift their community and where disadvantaged communities can access resources that they need.
We see tutoring as a way to empower individuals to work in the community. We provide flexible times, convenient locations, and meaningful experiences, allowing more community members to participate and to support community partners for longer.
We believe tutoring must be a reflective act that both helps strengthen individuals' support of others and helps individuals better understand themselves. We provide our tutors with access to industry mentors who help connect the work they are doing with us with what they've done in the past and what they want to do in the future.
We believe in leveraging the workforce skills of our community of volunteers by pairing those in need of professional support with industry experts who can provide insight into specific fields and feedback on professional documents.
We see the City Tutors as an opportunity to bring people together under a common purpose. We want like-minded individuals to feel they are part of a fellowship, to build their network with people within their discipline, and to expand the disciplines and industries they've been exposed to.
This is a Virtual Opportunity with no fixed address.
