Do you have a passion or expertise you would like to share with others? Have you wondered what it would be like to be a teacher? As a volunteer with Citizen Schools you can share your interests with middle school students at Renaissance Academy at Fisher (a public school in the Alum Rock Union Elementary School District) at 1720 Hopkins Drive; San Jose, CA 95122 or one of Citizen Schools' other partner schools in San Jose, Oakland or Redwood City. No previous teaching experience required.

The program takes place on the school campus, for 1.5 hours after school one day a week for just 10 weeks. You will work with students on a project from the Citizen Schools curriculum library, to enable the next generation of lawyers, engineers or artists! You will mentor and lead students through hands-on learning projects and help guide them into long-term pathways to education and career success to success. The program includes:

  • A library of pre-written curriculum on a variety of subjects
  • Training and school orientation
  • Co-teaching and lesson planning support from a Citizen School staff partner
  • A final "science fair" style presentation and event

We are actively recruiting volunteers for next semester to teach early March 2019 - May 2019. http://www.citizenschools.org/volunteer

Mission Statement

Citizen Schools envisions a world in which schools, companies and families partner to provide students with a set of real-world learning experiences that put them on a path to college and career success.

Description

Since 1995, Citizen Schools has been providing opportunities for adolescents to work side by side with experts to explore new fields, learn new skills, and build a foundation for their future. We partner with low-income communities that need additional support and resources. Our extended learning time program supports academic achievement in core subjects like English Language Arts and Mathematics, while building important 21st Century and Social Emotional skills through real-world learning experiences. Students who participate in Citizen Schools gain an additional 3 months of learning over the course of a year and are 25% more likely to enroll in college than low income students nationally.
