Organization Summary

The Sanctuary will be a haven for animals and people. We are in the early developmental stage now. Our goal, when realized, is to have a relatively large swath of land within a couple of hours of Oakland-San Francisco, with appropriate structures and resources for animals and people.

We promote the inherent value and deep connection of all life. We are creating a better world for all beings through education and support of people to cultivate loving kindness, compassion, and tolerance. We will support projects that move the world closer to peace through humane treatment of animals, environmental sustainability, and deeper interpersonal connections. We will rescue farmed, domestic, and injured wild animals and give them love, freedom from suffering, and agency. Each non-human animal will have an experience of peace with people, while people can experience deep new relationships with other beings, as well as connection with new people. We will create a place for individual growth and discovery, working toward world peace through inner peace. We are creating a world of love, harmony, and sustainability for all life.

Our founder, Faith Albright, DVM, currently practices veterinary medicine at the San Francisco city shelter, where she provides compassionate high-quality care and has a lifetime vision of a world for people and animals filled with dignity, kindness, and love provided with twin wings of wisdom and compassion.

Position Summary

During our developmental phase, One Living Sanctuary is seeking a volunteer(s) who is committed to our vision, able to assist with some of our core operational needs in project and data management, IT, fundraising, bookkeeping, social media, and general organization.

Principal Responsibilities

Project management

  • Manage required government forms, including the completion of some applications and the tracking of renewals.
  • Monitor all projects for steps and deadlines; manage some projects directly.
  • Establish and maintain secure, electronic document and file system of Sanctuary paperwork and projects in order to keep all information accessible and retrievable, as needed; serve as the "librarian" of documents and resources.
  • Manage Calendar for Founder/President.

General Operations

  • Facilitate technical support; manage some processes and fixes directly, while coordinating with consultants as needed.
  • Keep track of day to day bookkeeping; support QuickBooks implementation directly and/or through consultation.
  • Participate in the check writing process as part of financial controls.
  • Complete data entry in customer relationship database on donors and other stakeholders.

Fundraising/Marketing/Communications Support

  • Assist in development of PowerPoint presentations for fundraising.
  • Manage distribution of group emails including e-newsletters, updates, and fundraising appeals; draft some copy while managing format and initial edits.
  • Post to Facebook, Instagram, and perhaps Twitter; manage and reply to comments as appropriate.
  • Manage distribution of any aggregate "snail mail" distributions for fundraising or otherwise.
  • Reply to general e-mail queries with support from Founder or Board Members.
  • Provide website management and maintenance.

Qualifications

We are more interested in the applicants’ commitment to the vision of the Sanctuary for all sentient beings and in their ability and commitment to competently meet some core staffing needs in our early stages of development than we are in the candidates’ specific educational attainment or years of workplace experience.

Additionally, we are particularly seeking volunteers with these competences:

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and roles simultaneously.
  • Outstanding organizational skills; able to plan, organize, problem solve, and prioritize in a growing organization in its early stages.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently from a remote location, operating from a home or remote office with communication primarily through online and telephone.
  • Flexible work schedule and an ability to organize work with minimal supervision.
  • Based in the San Francisco/Oakland area a plus.

For the right individual, this is an opportunity to substantially support the launch and implementation of sanctuary for animals and people that is founded upon the values of loving kindness, dignity, and compassion for all, and, ultimately, to support the growth and impact of the Sanctuary as broadly as possible.

Successful applicant(s) begin with prioritizing initial key roles and responsibilities, as described here, with the guidance of the Founder/President. With fundraising that allows for the hiring of staff, volunteer(s) who apply for paid staff positions will be given serious consideration.

Mission Statement

The Sanctuary provides a haven for animals and people by promoting the inherent value and deep connection of all life. We create a better world for all beings by educating and supporting people working toward kindness, compassion, and tolerance. We support projects which move the world closer to peace through humane treatment of animals, environmental sustainability, and deeper interpersonal connections. Rescued farmed, domestic, and injured wild animals are given love, freedom from suffering, and agency. They experience peace with people, while people experience deep new relationships and connections with other beings. We create space for individual growth and discovery, working toward world peace through inner peace. We create a world of love, harmony, and sustainability for all life.

Description

People interact with animals through guided tours and learn about the life of the average farmed animal. Injured or orphaned wild animals are treated, rehabilitated, and released. We teach understanding of urban wildlife so people see wildlife as important members of our communities. Organizations whose ethics align with the sanctuary’s can rent workshop space. We provide camping, cabins, and rooms, combining sustainability with restorative relaxation. Massage, hot tub/sauna, nutrition courses, and wholesome plant-based food will be offered. Over time, we may work with a doctor, acupuncturist, chiropractor, or other health professionals to offer holistic health care. Volunteers/interns care for the animals, work in an organic garden, cook, and lead workshops or classes in topics which interest them.
