Mighty Earth Rhode Island ( www.mightyearth.org ) is looking for motivated individuals to help us on an exciting campaign to reform the meat industry. Volunteers will help us to build grassroots support, work with local organizations, and participate in environmental advocacy. This spring we will be organizing community events, working with the media, collecting petition signatures and photo petitions, and building a broad coalition of local groups.

The issue:

Industrial meat production has a larger environmental impact than almost any other human activity. Feeding and raising livestock for meat takes up more land and freshwater than any other industry, and the industry’s waste byproducts rank among the top sources of greenhouse gas emissions and water pollution around the world. Agribusiness giants like Cargill have directly financed the large-scale destruction of South America’s rainforests and prairies, the pollution of Midwest water, and created an enormous annual dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico.

The campaign:

This spring we are pushing for for sustainable farming practices, and an end to water pollution and deforestation. We’re calling on Stop and Shop to invest in sustainable agriculture - by choosing meat suppliers that are acting responsibly, and setting sustainability standards for the meat they sell.
