Recently, A Wider Circle opened its newest location. In the heart of Shaw and steps from the Metro, our new office, located at 1726 7th Street NW, Washington DC, will be a center of community change emphasizing job and life skills (stress reduction, financial literacy) building programs. We are looking for assistance on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9 am to 5 pm.

We have the following roles for volunteers. Please note that training will be provided.

  1. 1. Workforce development volunteer: Helping clients write or re-write resumes, search for jobs on line or apply for jobs on-line. Volunteers pick a regular volunteer slot during our open days and ideally offer a minimum of 3 hours per week. Volunteers in this position should have a minimum of five years' work experience. We also intend to offer an array of workshops on workforce readiness. If you have a special skill or experience in leading workshops on topics such as resumes, interviews, conflict resolution etc, please let us know.
    2.
Digital Literacy Support - In today's digital world, computer skills can be key to finding stable employment. We are looking for tech savvy and compassionate individuals to serve as Digital Literacy Volunteers. Work one-on-one to provide tutoring or even lead small classes of residents to grow and strengthen their basic computer skills, most particularly Microsoft Word and Excel. 3. Small Business Support - Have you ever started your own business? We are recruiting entrepreneurs and those who have started and/or run their own business to help clients do the same. Work one on one or with a small group to assist clients in writing a business plan, researching funding sources, and other aspects of business start up and implementation. 4. Greeters and front desk intake volunteers. Many individuals who come in will have questions or seek to understand our offerings. We seek volunteers willing to offer a minimum of 4 hours once per week to sit at the front desk, greet clients and help keep a welcoming presence in our space. 5. Data entry volunteers - We will carefully track the types of services provided and information about those we serve. We will have on-line intake tools but will work to have a database of clients. We seek volunteers willing to help in 3-4 hour increments entering client data and working in the database, running reports and detailing our support. Familiarity with databases, internet, excel, google forms highly preferred. Our Shaw office is accessed via metro and bus. Metered street parking is available. 6. Outreach and neighborhood supporters - As we build our presence, we will need to learn more about our neighbors and share information about ourselves and our services. We seek volunteers willing to volunteer in 3 hour increments to visit churches, social service organizations and others in the neighborhood dropping off flyers about our services as well as our involvement opportunities.

Mission Statement

This mission of A Wider Circle is simple: to end poverty for one individual and one family after another

Description

A Wider Circle is a 501(c)(3) grassroots nonprofit organization that provides holistic support to families in need. We furnish the homes of children and adults who are transitioning out of domestic violence or homeless shelters, or who are simply living without what most of us take for granted - beds, dressers, sheets, towels, and other basic need items. We offer educational programs on topics ranging from job skills and money management to stress management and other life skills. We also provide wrap-around support to those seeking to enter or re-enter the workforce, including professional attire, education, and one-on-one support. We work with the most vulnerable among us, and we do whatever we can do to help them move toward stability and independence.
