ORGANIZATION: Mighty Earth

Mighty Earth is seeking motivated community members to help on an exciting campaign to protect Iowan landscapes and promote a more sustainable future. For years, both politicians and the agricultural lobby have promoted biofuels as a sustainable energy source. Unfortunately, research has shown that biofuels, rather than providing a greener energy option, are in fact adding to greenhouse gas emissions in our atmosphere. With the next presidential campaign rapidly approaching, Iowa -- as the first state to vote for presidential nominees -- has the opportunity to shape a greener future for the entire Midwest by moving away from biofuels and instead promoting alternative energy sources, such as wind and solar.

As volunteers or interns, members of the team will help to build grassroots power by working with community members and local organizations as well as participating in environmental advocacy work. Join us in addressing one of the most relevant and threatening issues of our time: sustainable, alternative energy.

Over the next several months, we will...
-- organize community events
-- work with the media
-- collect petition signatures
-- building a broad coalition of local groups to join us in pushing for policies that work for the climate, for wildlife, and for everyday farmers rather than just the interests of big agriculture.

Mission Statement

Mighty Earth is a global campaign organization that works to protect tropical forests, oceans, and the climate. We aspire to be the most effective environmental organization in the world.

Description

Our campaigns and our team have played a leading role in persuading the world’s largest food and agriculture companies to adopt policies to eliminate deforestation and human rights abuse from their supply chains, and driven adoption of multi-billion dollar shifts to clean energy. Our Chairman, former Congressman Henry Waxman, is responsible for some of the most important environmental legislation of the last 50 years, notably the 1990 re-authorization of the Clean Air Act and the Safe Drinking Water Act.

Since April 2017, Mighty Earth has been a proud member of the High Carbon Stock Approach Steering Group. We are committed to the HCS approach and will work to support the application of the HCS methodology around the world. View our ethical guidelines here.

Whether we’re rallying for change internationally or locally, Mighty Earth is building a movement to protect our environment. Mighty is a fiscally sponsored project of the Center for International Policy, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Join us today.
