BACKGROUND:

Operation Access (OA) is a non-profit organization that for the past 25 years has enabled medical providers to donate over 18,000 vital outpatient surgical and specialty procedures to Bay Area residents in need. OA envisions health care equity for people facing barriers to care. OA serves patients in nine Bay Area counties (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, Santa Clara, San Francisco, San Mateo, Solano and Sonoma) through its San Francisco office.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The primary focus of this position is to help vulnerable patients obtain access to specialty care. This includes eligibility screening of patients, patient care coordination, and if interested, attending surgery sessions or eye clinics to interpret or assist with logistics with the goal of contributing in ways that enhance positive patient outcomes while enhancing the learning experience for the volunteer.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Provide phone eligibility screenings of patients referred to OA from area community clinics (Spanish required).
  • Assist in entering incoming referrals into the patient database.
  • Assist in production & mailing of appointment letters to patients.
  • Assist in making reminder calls to patients to assist in navigation and ensure compliance (Spanish required).
  • Assist in other areas of patient care coordination, if interested.
  • Assist in answering main phone line and distributing faxes.
  • Assist in entering of patient surveys to evaluate satisfaction with OA.
  • Provide logistical support at Saturday surgery sessions, if interested (Spanish required).

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Fluency in Spanish preferred.
  • Adept at MS Office software (Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint.)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Capacity to effectively handle multiple high-pressure tasks.
  • Ability to travel locally and to work some evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Knowledge of healthcare systems and medical terms a plus.
  • Attention to detail, ability to work independently, and skilled at problem solving.

For 28 years, OA has addressed unmet health needs of underserved populations and promoted medical volunteerism. In this time, OA and a network of over 100 community clinics have identified patients in need of care, and matched them with volunteer medical professionals who have donated over 22,000 vital surgical procedures and diagnostic services. In 2020 alone, OA coordinated 1,817 services for 1,252 low-income, uninsured people, restoring health, quality of life, and ability to work for these individuals and their families.
