For 35 years, Canal Alliance has been a nonprofit champion of immigrants who are challenged by a lack of resources and an unfamiliar environment. Every day, Canal Alliance educates, empowers and supports motivated immigrants to best meet their unique needs - from putting food on the table to becoming American citizens to gaining critical English language skills and graduating from college. Because when we support immigrants, Marin becomes a place where everyone can live, work and succeed. Each year, Canal Alliance collaborates with over 40 agencies and engages 500 volunteers to impact more than 4,000 youth, adults and families.

Tax Preparation Assistant

Canal Alliance, in conjunction with Earn It! Keep It! Save It! Marin County is getting ready for the 2019 Tax Season and we are looking for volunteers who can educate Canal Alliance’s community on the basics of income taxes and help prepare tax returns. During the 2018 tax season, 74 volunteers in Marin, helped to prepare 2,715 tax returns and put more than $2.9 million dollars in total refunds back in the hands of families and individuals in our community!

Our Tax Preparation Assistants educate our clients on the changes in this fiscal year’s tax declaration compared to years before and assist taxpayers with completing and filing their tax returns. Spanish skills and IRS tax certification are mandatory. Volunteers can obtain an IRS certification after completing three trainings that will be held Jan 5th, 12th and 19th from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm at the College of Marin. The certification can be obtained in person or online via www.irs.gov/app/vita/.

Hours of Operation for Free Tax Assistance are:

• Wednesdays: 10:00 am - 2:00 pm at Parent Services Project, 79 Belvedere St, San Rafael, CA 94901

• Saturdays: 10:00 am - 5:00 pm at Canal Alliance, 91 Larkspur St, San Rafael, CA 94901

Age: Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older

Requirements: ​

• Ability to communicate effectively in Spanish

• All of our tax preparers are trained and certified by the IRS and FTB.

• All of our volunteers need to be comfortable working with a computer and data entry.

• Each volunteer is highly encouraged to commit to 4 hours per week during the tax season from January 29th through April 15th.

• Cultural competence in working with diverse populations, including communities of color, immigrants, and persons of various ages, socioeconomic backgrounds, health status, and abilities.
