Mission Statement

Heroes Read is a program where children are able to read and is empowered to succeed. To achieve this we engage community volunteers to read one on one weekly with students in Kindergarten through Second grade who are selected by their schools to participate. Children in the program also receive books each month to take home and keep to read with their families.

Description

Heroes Read is program that began in three elementary schools in Wake County. It is a reflection of a program that began 25 years ago in Oregon. The goal of the program is for students to develop a love of reading with the support of a weekly volunteer. Currently, the program provides over 1,000 books for students to choose to read on a weekly basis. Students have been provided over 500 opportunities to take books to share with families and build home libraries.
