Prepare our students for the future of work! Volunteer with a Girls Who Code Club in your community!

Computing skills are the most sought-after in the US job market, with demand growing 3X the national average. Computing is where the jobs are - and where they will be in the future - but girls across the US are being left behind. Today, less than a quarter of computing jobs are held by women, and that number is declining.

You can help reverse the decline. Girls Who Code Clubs inspire, educate, and equip our girls for tomorrow's computing jobs. Help us bring FREE Girls Who Code Clubs to our community by volunteering as a Clubs Facilitator. Applications for Fall 2018 are open now.

Clubs are FREE after-school programs for 3rd-5th and 6th -12th grade girls to join our sisterhood of supportive peers and role models and use computer science to change the world. Clubs are led by Facilitators, who can be teachers, computer scientists, librarians, parents, or volunteers from any background or field. Many Facilitators have NO technical experience and learn to code alongside their Club members.

To Facilitate a Club, you must:

  • Be 18+
  • Pass a background check
  • Be available to lead the Club for 1-2 hours per week
  • Be comfortable learning alongside Club girls as they explore the foundational computer science concepts. Our curriculum is designed so that anyone can facilitate a Club; no computer science experience is needed! In fact, many Facilitators have NO technical background.
  • Have a passion for Girls Who Code’s mission to close the gender gap in technology and the ability to foster community within your Girls Who Code Club.

All materials from Girls Who Code are provided for FREE to the Club Facilitator, including:

  • 6th-12th Clubs : 120+ hours of curriculum, tutorials of all skill levels, and an online learning management system
  • 3rd-5th Clubs : a few free copies of the book Learn to Code and Change the World , flexible meeting agendas, chapter guides, and suggested offline and optional online activities
  • Recruitment materials, including student and volunteer flyers
  • Program management support, including field trip and grant opportunities upon availability
  • Facilitator trainings, resources and real-time support

Mission Statement

San Jose Public Library enriches lives by fostering lifelong learning and by ensuring that every member of the community has access to a vast array of ideas and information. San Jose Public Library is a winner of the 2011 National Medal for Museum and Library Service, the nation’s highest honor for museums and libraries. Recipients are selected because of their innovative approaches to public service and the contribution they make to the educational, civic, cultural and economic development goals of their communities.

Description

Hillview Branch Library is located in East San Jose, near the Story and King intersection. We are located right next door to Fischer Middle School and have a rambunctous, lively crew of students who frequent the library. We serve a diverse, vibrant community of all ages, many of whom are native Spanish and Vietnamese speakers. Some of our popular activities include our storytimes, ESL Conversation Club, citizenship programs, and special holiday celebrations like our Halloween party and Posadas with Santa. We have a computer area for teens, children and adults and a mixed-age area; we also have 20 laptops that the public can check out and which we also use for programs. The library has two study rooms that the public can reserve and a beautiful community room with a projector and built-in sound system that is available to rent for free, open community activities. In addition, our library features a classroom space in our Family Learning Center and a separate office for virtual programs.

Public libraries in California seek to engage the talents, skills and commitment of volunteers to serve the communities’ information and literacy needs. Libraries offer a variety of skilled volunteer opportunities to make a meaningful contribution to library programs, operations, fundraising events and other community engagement functions. Skilled volunteers have opportunities to lead projects, work with teams of staff and volunteers, learn new skills, and have fun.
