The American Red Cross serving the Region of Oklahoma is seeking enthusiastic individuals to serve as the Service to Armed Forces (SAF) Capacity Building and Volunteer Engagement Specialist from November 1, 2019 - October 31, 2020 for a one-year contract, with the possibility of renewal dependent upon continued grant funding.

Please note: this is an AmeriCorps VISTA service position with a 12-month contract. This is NOT a salaried employee position. The position is considered full-time, federal service and is limited to a living allowance (no additional salary) and benefits stated below:

Service Term Benefits for Program Year 2019-20

  • If re-locating for service, VISTA offers a travel and settling-in allowance to qualified members, as well as return to home-of-record travel allowance once term is successfully completed
  • 10 days personal leave, 10 days medical leave, 5 days emergency leave, military leave, jury duty leave, and American Red Cross official holidays off, currently 6 days per year

The SAF AmeriCorps VISTA Specialist will support the delivery of American Red Cross programs and services to meet the needs of United States military members, veterans and their families in accordance with Red Cross policies and procedures. This is accomplished through working with volunteers and other Red Cross departments to support strong service-delivery and visibility of SAF across the state.

This position will focus on:
1. Volunteer Management Support:
Supports a volunteer program to meet the workforce model and to enable delivery of SAF programs and services. Assists in the recruitment, onboarding, training and daily supervision of volunteer staff. Works closely with Regional Volunteer Services to develop and implement strategic regional SAF volunteer program including identifying volunteer leaders to aid in managing services across the state to grow program capacity in the region. Helps ensure volunteer staff ratio reflects the diversity of the population being served.

2. Service Delivery:
Ensures the delivery of SAF core services to all clients within their jurisdiction with excellence. Services may include use of case management system, presenting briefings or trainings, collection and analysis of data, providing needed materials, and outreach within the community. Create and implement procedures and documents to begin and execute the Aging Home Veterans Visitation program, etc.

3. Reporting & Admin Support:
Monitors and reports on the outcomes and results of programs and services to ensure organizational accountability and makes recommendations for continuous improvement to ensure metrics are consistently met. Aids in creating an accountability/tracking method for regular and timely assessment of progress. Submits monthly service reports to AmeriCorps VISTA.

Other duties as needed in order to accomplish yearly SAF regional goals and metrics.

Position Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree or 2+ years relevant experience is preferred. Associates degree or other combination of education and experience which provides an equivalent background is acceptable.

Experience: With no degree, A minimum of two years related experience is required.

Skills and Abilities: Requires strong computer skills, including excel. Public speaking skills and the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing are required. Must have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well in an individual or team environment. The ability to balance multiple, competing priorities is essential. Ability to self-direct, learn quickly and work independently with little supervision is required.
Experience with American Red Cross programs and services is desired. Familiarity with military culture, regulations and protocol will be helpful.
