Many of our volunteers mention that they have thought about becoming a Hospice Volunteer for years before they actually replied to one of our posts. Their experience of caring for loved family members and friends with end-of-life support resulted in them innately knowing that they could be of service to other families when loss enters their world. Is this you, too?

Are you ready in 2019 to help members in your community face the death of their loved-ones?

Hospice volunteering can be challenging, because you enter an environment that is very emotionally charged. However, it is not complicated. Those who are successful at doing this kind of service are willing to be there... Without imposing their plan... And without judging the decisions of those they are helping. Being there and allowing patients/families to be themselves is the "trick." Hospice volunteers are willing to let patients and families do what they need to do, and say what they need to say in their time of distress.

The general services that Hospice Volunteers provide are respite support, companionship, errand assistance and vigil presence. But if you have skills to share, like Aroma, Massage, Music and Pet Therapy, we welcome such involvement, too!

There is a process to starting as a Hospice Volunteer, which includes a training program, as well as background and health checks. Details are available in an Introductory Packet. If you are ready to explore Hospice Volunteering as the way you give back to your community, please request a Packet, by replying to this post. [The Introductory Packet is printed, so a mailing address will be needed.]

The Ocean County office of Holy Redeemer HomeCare and Hospice provides our special kind of care throughout all of Ocean County. Training will be held at out Toms River office. As a volunteer, though, you will only be assigned to where you are comfortable traveling to.

The next training sessions are scheduled to start in early February 2019. Each class will be limited to 12 participants. I hope to hear from you soon.
