Internship Summary: The Tax Intern is responsible for conducting outreach and education to all of ECDC’s clients about US taxes, and helping to facilitate tax preparation between clients and tax preparers.
Key Responsibilities
- Create fliers on the US tax system, what tax scams look like, and free tax clinics in the area.
- Visit area community colleges, apartment complexes, and other community areas in order to disseminate information on taxes.
- Contact all current and former ECDC clients through phone, email, and in person in order to educate them about taxes and invite them to obtain help through ECDC’s free tax service.
- Facilitate tax preparation between clients and tax preparers in Virginia by visiting clients, organizing tax documents, sending them to ECDC tax specialists, and ensuring that tax documents are signed and sent to the IRS and Maryland Comptroller
Qualifications
- Interest in domestic refugee resettlement/refugee and immigration policy
- Language skills (especially Farsi, Dari, Arabic, French, or Spanish) a plus but not required
- Ability to work 4-5 days a week
- Have a driver’s license and clean driving record
Competencies
- Excellent written and verbal communication and organizational skills.
- Highly proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and Outlook email system.
- Ability to conduct "cold calls" and "cold emails"
- Ability to plan and manage work to meet deadlines
- Ability to relate professionally to and collaborate with diverse individuals in a multicultural environment.
- Ability to adjust to changing work tasks and priorities.
Benefits
- $500 stipend paid every two weeks
- January through April 22 nd, 2019.

Mission Statement
The African Community Center of the DC Metro (ACC-DC) is a branch office of The Ethiopian Community Development Council, Inc. (ECDC), one of ten Resettlement Agencies authorized by the Department of State to resettle refugees. ECDC’s mission is to resettle and assist refugees and immigrants in integrating successfully into their new communities in the U.S.. ACC-DC is responsible for directly helping refugees located in the DC metro area with offices in Arlington, VA and Silver Spring, MD. ACC-DC provides social, educational, and employment programs for newly resettled refugees while working with community partners to promote self-sufficiency and integration across the DC area.
Description
ACC-DC is non-profit organization that works toward the resettlement of refugees within the United States. We conduct case work, as well as educational and social outreach programs for newly arrived refugee families. These programs are aimed to help the families recover from past traumatic experiences, get adjusted to American life, and become economically self-sufficient contributing members of their new communities. The refugees we work with refugees come from all across the globe.
Some of the services that we provide refugee families include:
- Housing and rent for 3 months (families will hopefully be self-sufficient by this time)
- Basic home furnishings
- Enrollment in ESL classes
- Setting up medical and social security appointments
- School enrollment for the children
- Helping refugee families connect with their new communities on a social and logistical level
