Mission Statement

Confluence connects people to place and each other through art and education. We work in collaboration with Northwest communities, tribes, and renowned artist Maya Lin to create reflective moments that can shape the future of the Columbia River system. We share stories of this river through six public art installations, educational programs, community engagement and a rich digital experience.

Description

Confluence is a collaboration of Pacific Northwest Tribes, internationally recognized artist Maya Lin, local communities, and civic groups from Washington and Oregon to reclaim public spaces of cultural, physical, and ecological significance to the Columbia River system and its people. The stories of the river system are shared through six public art installations, educational programs, and community engagement.

The organization was formed at the request of many Pacific Northwest Tribes who felt the coming Lewis and Clark Expedition bicentennial presented the opportunity for a more inclusive, farther reaching story; one that encompassed the heritage of indigenous people and addressed ecological change to their homelands.

In 2010, the four completed sites served more than 1.7 million visitors, including 566,376 to the Cape Disappointment State Park site, Ilwaco, WA; 167,283 to the Vancouver Land Bridge site, Vancouver, WA; 1,000,000 (estimate) to the Sandy River Delta site, Troutdale, OR; and 63,573 to the Sacajawea State Park site, Clarkston, WA. In 2015 we plan to dedicate Lin's Listening Circle at Chief Timothy State Park, Clarkston Washington and in 2016, the Celilo Arc at Celilo Park, OR.

We are currently looking for individuals to lead informational walks and to help with basic maintenance needs at the Sandy River Delta Bird Blind and the Vancouver Land Bridge. We like to find creative ways to incorporate professional skills and passions of those inetrested in to the work we do.
