SOWN At a Glance

The Mission: SOWN provides innovative solutions so adults 50+ lead independent, healthy lives and age in place in their homes and communities.

As a pioneer in providing cutting edge supportive services, primarily to women over 50, the Supportive Older Women’s Network (SOWN) recognizes how physical health is intrinsically tied to emotional well-being and the strength of mutual support. SOWN provides evidence-based, cost-effective, collaborative services in 25 locations throughout Philadelphia. SOWN prevents and reduces isolation, protecting older adults from depression and related serious health consequences. Whether for a grandparent raising a grandchild, an elder with health concerns, a caregiver for a loved one who is ill, or an older adult living alone, SOWN is there - extending a lifeline of support.

  • GrandFamily Resource Center - keeping vulnerable families together and enabling at-risk children to live long-term in stable homes. Serving grandparents raising children who need comprehensive preventive and supportive services to keep children out of foster care, stay healthy, and thrive in school.
  • Healthy Lives -health and wellness initiatives to improve quality of life and strengthen social connections for older adults living in the community.
  • Counseling for Homebound Adults - weekly group and individual counseling by clinical social workers over teleconferencing for homebound elders.
  • Parkinson's Care Partners Support Groups - professionally-facilitated support groups for caregivers of family members with Parkinson’s disease.

Mission Statement

For 30+ years SOWN has pioneered innovative solutions to enhance the quality of life of adults 50+ and their families. SOWN builds strong community social support networks that enable older adults (mostly women) to function independently, live healthier lives, cope with problems, reduce isolation, decrease depression and build community. SOWN's intervention model provides a venue for re-creating or strengthening needed social connections. SOWN's network of on-going peer groups create a lifeline for individuals who are caregivers, coping with chronic health issues, or aging in place. SOWN provides peer groups in over 25 different community locations throughout Philadelphia. SOWN plans to continue to innovate and develop effective ways to enhance older adults' ability to function independently, prevent isolation, maintain roles in their families/communities and improve their families' lives.

Description

Founded in 1984 SOWN pioneered the critical linkage between older women's health and emotional well being. SOWN has since created strong community networks that enable older adults and their families to function independently, live healthier lives and age in their homes and communities.

SOWN provides peer groups for older women at over 25 community sites in Philadelphia. SOWN's unique model builds on the strengths of olders and communities. Our peer groups and workshops create sustaining mechanisms for older adults and families to rely on over time.
