Drivers makes it possible for seniors to live independently when they no longer are in a position to drive themselves to places such as to shopping, church, banks, nail and hair salons, medical and dental appointments. Members request rides several days in advance via phone calls to Village Office, stating starting time, location, and ending time. They may request one-way or round trip rides. Volunteers check online database and sign up to provide either a one-way or a round-trip ride, as their schedule permits.
Members may use a cane or walker to assist them getting to and from the driver's car. Driver must be able and willing to collapse walkers and place them temporarily in their car. Only drivers with Village training may assist members in wheelchairs.
About Villages of San Mateo County
P.O. Box 813, San Carlos, CA 94070, US
Supporting our members with services, resources and community connections so they can enjoy vibrant, healthy and fulfilling lives in their own homes.
Villages are vibrant grassroots communities of older adults who age actively in their own homes. Through a nonprofit, membership-based network, members make new connections, are exposed to different perspectives and give and receive mutual support. Villages are revolutionizing aging in our country. Their network of volunteers help people age interdependently by sponsoring social and educational activities, encouraging community engagement, and assisting members with services such as transportation, minor home repairs, technology, companionship and pet care. Fear of isolation is replaced with confidence that as older adults they can look forward to active lives filled with friendship, learning, and laughter.
