The Basic and Transitional Studies Division at Seattle Central College which works with Adult Basic Education (ABE), General Educational Development (GED), High School Completion (HSC), English as a Second Language (ESL), and Integrated Basic Education Skills and Training (I-BEST) students.

We are looking for volunteers to assist in our Adult Basic Education course held at the Downtown Emergency Service Center, which is located at 505 3 rd Ave (right in Pioneer Square and accessible by bus and light rail). The class runs from 9 AM to 11:20 AM, Monday - Thursday. The students served in this course come from all different backgrounds-there are students who need to improve their English, build basic academic skills, and boost computer literacy, which includes job application and resume-writing. We also help students learn to become more independent navigating outside community services, which is a potential role for a volunteer interested in health and human services.

This class serves the homeless population and does its best to accommodate students with mental health issues whenever possible. Classroom assistants in this course will work with students either one-on-one or in small groups on a variety of subjects, but the assistant’s area of study and/or skill-set will be taken into account. This is a unique opportunity to gain experience working with at-risk populations and gain a deeper understanding of the homeless crisis in our community.

The Basic and Transitional Studies Division Tutoring Program at Seattle Central College exists to support and empower ESL, Adult Basic Education (ABE) and GED students by providing one-on-one tutors to assist these students as they pursue their goals. Our program serves a diverse group of students who speak many different languages and come from many different parts of the world. Our students also come from a variety of educational backgrounds.
