Job Summary: Reporting to the Camp Co-Directors, the NWABA Camps in Oregon and Washington Counselor will deliver camp programming directly to children and youth with visual impairments at NWABA Camps in Oregon and Washington. The counselor will act as a mentor, coach, and teacher throughout either one or both, week-long, camps.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with camp activity implementation
  • Assist with daily living skills and instruction of assigned campers
  • Complete sport and Expanded Core Curriculum assessment electronically for assigned campers
  • Provide excellent customer service to athletes, partner agencies, and parents
  • Other duties as assigned by Camp Co-Directors or Executive Director

Required Expectations

  • Set a good example in all you do at camp
  • Refrain from possessing and using illegal drugs, tobacco, and alcohol during agreed upon term
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Must be 19 years or older or have completed at least one year of college
  • Must be able to pass a background check
  • Ability to commit to being on duty 24/7 during the time that camp is in session
    • Camp Sessions:
      • Session A (Oregon): 8:00am on July 21, 2019 to 4:00pm on July 26, 2019
      • Session B (Washington): 8:00am on July 28, 2019 to 4:00pm on August 2, 2019
    • Transportation will be provided from Session A (Oregon) to Session B (Washington) on July 26, 2019
  • Ability to be at orientation on:
    • July 20, 2019 8:00am-8:00pm for all staff working Session A (Oregon)
    • July 21, 2019 9:00am-1:00pm for all staff working Session A (Oregon)
    • July 27, 2019 8:00am-4:00pm for staff working only Session B (Washington)
    • July 27, 2019 4:00pm-8:00pm for staff working both camps
    • July 28, 2019 9:00am-1:00pm for all staff working Session B (Washington)
  • Must have access to a laptop computer/tablet with Microsoft Word during week of camp

Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to be moderately active and able to stand 12-14 hours daily
  • Ability to self-direct and work well without constant supervision
  • Ability to demonstrate high levels of enthusiasm, energy, and initiative during all program events
  • Past experience with leading recreation or sports programs, with a specific emphasis on track and field, hiking, water sports, soccer, and cycling
  • Ability and experience in riding a tandem bike
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 40lbs, including tandem bikes, kayaks, and other adaptive equipment on a regular basis
  • Experience working with individuals with visual impairments or other physical disabilities
  • Pre-professional or professional experience in visual impairments, physical education, or physical activity
  • Current First Aid card and CPR training

Compensation:

  • Week-long stipend is $300/week
    • Position runs July 19-26, 2019 for interns working Session A (Oregon) only
    • Position runs July 27-Aug. 2, 2019 for interns working Session B (Washington) only
    • Position runs July 19-Aug. 2, 2019 for interns working both camps
      • Counselors working both camps will have some time off between both camps
    • Full time.
      • Counselors will be on duty 24/7 July 21-July 26, 2019 for Session A (Oregon)
      • Counselors will be on duty 24/7 July 28-Aug. 2, 2019 for Session B (Washington)
