We are looking for a volunteer to translate a book from English to Spanish.

This book is the only grammar book we know of that describes Emberá, an indigenous language in Panama, in a way that ordinary people can understand and learn it. By translating it from English to Spanish, you will be creating the ONLY Spanish-to-Emberá book easily obtainable, thereby providing the only available learning materials currently in existence to the 30,000+ Emberá people in Panama who are watching their language fade away. It's a HUGE contribution!

The book is 124 pages long, not a lot of words but a good amount of paragraph formatting and a variety of symbols in order to type the Emberá. We have a paper copy, will scan and email to you it as images, and would like a Microsoft Word or LibreOffice document back.

What's in it for you? You'll not only improve your keyboard skills, you can learn a Native American language in the process! You'll be making an enormous difference for the whole tribe of Emberá, and for our tiny organization working to support them in preserving their language.

Mission Statement

We support indigenous people as they celebrate and teach their ancestral knowledge and create thriving modern communities aligned with their traditional vision.

Description

We collaborate with the Emberá and Wounaan people in Darién, Panama. We sponsor programs of classes in which elders teach the youngers the traditional culture and language, aiming to sustain personal and communal options for independence and resilience. To support a community's own desires for sustainable technological development, we also offer workshops and discussions about sustainable growth options.

We are guided by an all-Indigenous Advisory Council, which since 2017 has focused us on language. We proudly ran the first ever in-community classes in the Emberá language in 2018, and are aiming to expand that work.

We are inspired by these and other organizations: Pachamama Alliance, Four Worlds International, The Barefoot College, Local Futures, Schooling the World, and Cultural Survival.
