STEM Scaffold Santa Fe is a collaborative working group that aims to recruit, train and place caring local STEM college students and STEM professionals in sustained high school STEM mentorship programs.

We have a project-based mentorship program at Capital High School with 120 students. We are looking for STEM professionals to serve as volunteers who would commit to be mentors along side SFCC student mentors in addition to the teacher. The commitment would be one day or two days a week as we have 4 shifts to choose from. You are welcome to take one, two, three or all 4 shifts as long as you commit to participate for an 8- week session. There will be a training on the project on Jan. 12.

  • The first session is 8 weeks long: Jan. 21-March 15.
  • The working sessions are Wednesday and Thursday mornings.
  • First Class: 8:40-10:15 (arrival at 8:30) and Second Class: 10:55-12:30 (arrival at 10:45)
  • The second session is March 25-May 17.

Description

STEM SANTA FE organizes out-of-school time programs to spark students interest in STEM careers. STEM Santa Fe organizes large one-day STEM events for as well as facilitate afterschool STEM clubs with focus on mentoring youth to enter STEM competitions and in turn help build perseverance and professionalism. According to the U.S. Department of education, "Not enough of our youth have access to quality STEM learning opportunities and too few students see these disciplines as springboards for their careers." STEM Santa Fe fosters a supportive and celebratory STEM environment and gets our youth excited about STEM career opportunities.

Focus areas:

1. Initiating out-of-school enrichment and mentoring programs in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

2. Mentoring students to attend and enter STEM competitions in the region.

3. Fostering teamwork, problem solving skills, and resilience to prepare the youth for the future job market demand.

4. Organizing STEM conferences and events to inspire students to remain engaged in school and in STEM fields.

5. Engaging under-represented groups in STEM, mainly girls, Hispanics and Native Americans to to close the achievement gap

6. Partnering with local groups , schools and non-profits advocating for STEM education.

7. Building a network among students, teachers, STEM professionals, volunteers, and educators.
